The goal of the Green Leaders Fellowship through USDS was to improve connections between US and Namibian students while collaborating on sustainability projects.
Overview
The city of Windhoek, Namibia, is facing significant environmental challenges. Deforestation is mainly caused by human activities such as charcoal production, logging, and agriculture. As a result, there is an urgent need to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and sustainable land management practices in the local community.
Project Green Sphere aimed to reduce deforestation and increase wildlife conservation efforts in Windhoek, Namibia.

Process
30 students in the United States and Namibia collaborated. We held discussions about conservation issues in Namibia to gain cultural understanding and background.
Then, I recommended educational workshops to ensure our project followed SMART goals and was useful. I developed the logic model to the left to outline the procedure for creating conservation workshops in the country.
After that, I collaborated with Namibian students to create a PowerPoint and curriculum. They presented the curriculum to students across several schools in Windhoek in June 2023.

Lessons Learned
It is important to respect other cultures. Each group was able to learn more about conservation policy, national park structures, and unique encounters with wildlife in each country.
Projects must be time-bound and achievable. This means that sometimes projects need to be adjusted to a smaller scope.
Education can be effective when the audience hasn't learned about your topic before.
